Originally I was planning to do my online tax submission (確定申告) the same way I did it last year via the web app at https://www.keisan.nta.go.jp/kyoutu/ky/sm/top using my MyNumber Card with a IC card-reader on my MacBook. However since they opened the gates on 2/16 their software wasn’t compatible with Safari’s newest version 14.0.3 as stated in this post: https://www.keisan.nta.go.jp/oshirase/r2info/info007.html

The suggested workaround has been to log in through Myna-Portal (マイナポータル) and segue to creating your tax forms from there.

Well, I did not do that and instead chose to use my old Android smartphone for the time being since that could also read the MyNumber card and had no problem logging into the software.

You’ll get a warning as below, which states that you can’t load data files that were created with a smartphone or tablet.

So I guess, next time I’d rather use the suggested workaround or just wait till they fix the issue.

In other news, the tax submission deadline has been extended until 4/15 this year (similar to last year) because of the pandemic. So at least there’s no need to hurry, yet.
